Bryant Park

Spirit Totems

by Herb Alpert

October 6, 2005 – Mid-November, 2005

Southwest corner of the park (near the chess area)

Debut presentation of six monumental cast bronze sculptures created by music luminary and visual artist Herb Alpert.

The Totems range in height from 8 to 12 feet, weigh approximately 900 pounds each, and feature organic forms that evoke a chain, feeling, or a phrase, which, like a Miles Davis solo, is distinctive. In order to create the Totems, Herb forms wax maquettes and small clay prototypes, then larger wax molds are fashioned, and the castings are finished with subtle color resulting from acid washes and oxide patinas. Herb drew inspiration for his Totems from the Totem Sculpture Garden in Vancouver, British Columbia’s Stanley Park.

The exhibit is installed on the gravel near Sixth Avenue and West 40th Street.
